We came across an interesting article this weekend and wanted to share it with you.
Peter Gasser, a Swiss psychiatrist, is currently conducting a study to determine whether LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) could be used to treat fear and anxious feelings in disorders such as PTSD and anxiety disorders.
The article discusses how "until the 1970s, LSD was frequently used to treat depression, anxiety and addiction and, less commonly, migraines, arthritis, paralysis and skin complaints." However, after that time, it became the drug of choice for the "hippy generation" and was then discontinued in scientific study after being made illegal.
Gasser says, "if you handle LSD with care, it isn't any more dangerous than other therapies." His current study was approved with 12 patients and he is seeing some success. However, that sample size will be too small to generalize to a larger population.
He says that, "what we hope to demonstrate in the end is that no serious incidents occurred, and that the results suggest that this is an effective treatment method."
