AMHC provides 24/7crisis services in Aroostook, Washington, and Hancock counties. Services are provided in the home, in a community setting, and by telehealth. In addition, crisis services are available during business hours 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at any AMHC outpatient office in Fort Kent, Madawaska, Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Calais, Machias, and Ellsworth.
Crisis services include a mental health and/or substance use assessment and safety planning. Referrals are provided for additional services as needed.

Crisis intervention services are offered 24/7, 365 days per year via telephone, telehealth, and face-to-face contact. Mobile Crisis Service providers are available to meet with individuals in their home or other community setting, at an AMHC outpatient office, or as requested by local medical providers for consultation at the local hospital’s emergency room.
First and foremost, AMHC’s crisis staff establishes the physical and psychological safety of the individual in crisis to guard against injury and even death. AMHC crisis staff is trained to assure that the appropriate intervention considers the individual’s unique needs, circumstances, preferences, and goals.
Crisis stabilization appointments are available to clients who need ongoing support to remain in the community. This is a way to support clients in the least restrictive setting and assist clients to manage their crisis from home as they stabilize.
This service includes ongoing assessment of risk and safety and crisis intervention support with a focus on exploration of coping skills that support a client in maintaining stabilization and obtaining pre-crisis levels of functioning, safety planning, and linkages to any needed services. Mobile Crisis Services providers can work with a client for up to six (6) crisis stabilization appointments in 30 days. AMHC operates two Adult CSUs and two Children’s CSUs. This is a voluntary, unlocked, short-term, residential setting for clients in need of a safe and supportive environment while they stabilize from their behavioral health crisis; they do not provide psychiatric medication management. The units are staffed 24/7 with Crisis Counselors who provide support, crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals to services. Anyone can refer throughout the state. Referrals are made by directly calling the unit.

A process used for individuals or groups of people who have been exposed to a traumatic incident in the community or while at work (suicide, violence, and natural disasters are some examples). The process helps people cope with, and recover from, an incident's aftereffects. CISD enables participants to understand that they are not alone in their reactions to a distressing event and provides them with an opportunity to discuss their thoughts and feelings in a controlled, safe environment. Optimally CISD occurs within 24 to 72 hours of an incident. CISD can be accessed by contacting AMHC Call Center at 1-800-244-6431.
This service provides longer-term support and intervention for youth, and their families, who are at risk of suicide. Navigators are responsible for creating a safety-net that offers opportunities for early intervention, continuous care coordination, creation and practice of community care plans and crisis safety plans, and follow-up to ensure safety for adolescents ages 10-24 and their families.
