Therapeutic Foster Care

AMHC’s Therapeutic Foster Care program provides homes to children in need of placement who are having more significant behavioral and emotional challenges that may be a result of abuse and neglect trauma, and/or medical problems. Children in care are treated as the valuable assets they are in society; with careful attention, respect, and understanding.

Therapeutic Foster Care parents, also known as resource parents, are trained to support the individual needs of each child in a safe, nurturing environment. Resource Parents also encourage relationship-building between the child and birth family. The goal is to establish permanency in the child’s life, as in, permanent reunification with the child’s birth family, an adoptive family, or long-term foster care with one family.
AMHC staff ensure that resource parents and birth families are an integral part of the child’s treatment team; and staff make referrals to additional community resources as needed. It is AMHC’s highest priority that resource parents and birth families are also supported.
AMHC recognizes the commitment resource parents make when investing in the life of a child. Resource parents can expect supportive and encouraging supervision, training, and respite so that they may be successful in fulfilling the following responsibilities:

• Follow through on treatment recommendations
• Provide consistent and realistic discipline and guidance that is age-appropriate
• Understand and show acceptance toward child’s birth family
• Commit to promote the reunification of families and permanency for children
