AMHC Welcomes Sonya Keene to Presque Isle Team
Sometimes the journey to finding where you belong takes you far from home, only to bring you back again with a wealth of experience and a renewed sense of purpose. That’s exactly the story for Sonya Keene, LCSW, who has recently joined the clinical team at AMHC’s Presque Isle Outpatient Office.
“I attended high school in Aroostook County, but I have been living downstate for most of my life,” said Sonya Keene. “I am excited to be back with family, living and working up in the County again.”
Now residing in Caribou near her family, Keene brings with her more than a decade of specialized clinical experience that will strengthen AMHC’s ability to serve the mental health needs of northern Maine residents. She provides therapeutic support to clients ages 3 and up across Aroostook County, offering both in-person appointments and telehealth.
Keene’s arrival is particularly significant given her clinical background in treating eating disorders, an often-overlooked area of mental health care in rural communities. AMHC facilities offer eating disorder treatment, including services for anorexia, bulimia, and related conditions, along with diet and exercise counseling, and Keene’s expertise will enhance these specialized services.
“Sonya comes to AMHC with a strong clinical background and expertise in treating disordered eating,” said Christy Daggett, AMHC Chief Executive Officer. “She is a wonderful addition to the Presque Isle team.”
Keene earned her Bachelor of Science in Child Development and Family Relations from the University of Maine at Orono in 2008, followed by her Master of Social Work from Boston University in 2015. Throughout her career in Maine, she has served in various clinical roles, including Clinical Supervisor and Eating Disorder Clinician.
At the Presque Isle location, Keene joins an established team of mental health professionals working collaboratively to address diverse community needs. AMHC’s Presque Isle Outpatient Office provides a variety of adult and children’s services, including outpatient therapy, co-occurring mental health and substance use services, couples and family therapy, medication management, and school-based mental health therapy services.
As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), AMHC offers integrated mental health and substance use treatment services, operating 27 service locations across Aroostook, Hancock, and Washington counties with a team of 350+ employees serving up to 5,500 clients annually. Most insurances are accepted, and a sliding fee schedule based on family size and income is available. No one is denied services due to an inability to pay.
AMHC welcomes Sonya Keene and the specialized skills and dedication she contributes to mental health services in the Presque Isle area. Her return to Aroostook County represents not just a homecoming, but an investment in the mental health and well-being of the community that shaped her.
