Honoring Micah Wall with the AMHC Recovery Scholarship

The AMHC Micah Wall Recovery Scholarship Fund was created to help individuals access vital recovery services. Inspired by Micah’s own journey, the fund understands that overcoming addiction is a process that begins with recognizing your struggles, having the desire to be sober, and reaching out for help.

This scholarship provides financial support to individuals committed to recovery who face financial barriers. In honor of their son, who was lost to substance use disorder, Micah’s family is dedicated to making these funds available to as many people as possible.

Micah’s recovery journey included therapy, strong participation in the recovery community, and unwavering support from his family. His hope was always that he and others who struggled with addiction would find lasting, hope-filled recovery.

Through this fund, his legacy lives on in every individual who receives the support they need to continue their recovery journey.

About Micah

His family and community deeply loved Micah Brian Wall. Growing up in Caribou, Maine, he was known for his talents, leadership skills, and academic achievements. He excelled in school as a straight-A student, served in student government, and was chosen to represent Maine at Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. He was also a gifted athlete, placing third in his wrestling category at the State championships.

Micah pursued higher education at Gordon College and later earned both a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in economics and health administration from the University of Maine at Orono.

Even with these accomplishments, Micah faced a decade-long struggle with substance use disorder. He was open about his journey and wanted people to know that addiction does not discriminate. By speaking publicly about both his challenges and triumphs, Micah helped reduce stigma and encouraged others to seek help.

The last two years of Micah’s life were marked by meaningful family connectedness and healing. His legacy is reflected in the many lives touched and supported by the scholarship that bears his name.

Stories of Impact

Since its creation, the Micah Wall Recovery Scholarship Fund has made a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families:

  • A young mother’s new beginning: In 2021, a young woman discovered she was expecting while attending treatment at AMHC’s Residential Treatment Facility (RTF). With the help of the scholarship, she was able to complete treatment, give birth to a healthy baby boy, and remain an active member of the recovery community. Today, she continues to live in sobriety. This scholarship changed not only her life, but also her son’s.

  • Celebrating success at treatment court: At a treatment court graduation, staff reconnected with an alumna who had received the scholarship. She was thriving in recovery and later shared her story at an RTF Alumni Picnic, inspiring others with her journey.

  • From recipient to peer support: Two scholarship recipients eventually became AMHC staff members, serving as peer support workers. Their lived experience allows them to guide others through the recovery process with empathy and understanding.

  • A mother reunited with her children: Another scholarship recipient called a year after her discharge to share that she had completed treatment court, reunited with her daughters, and was preparing to study substance use disorder treatment so she could become a counselor herself.

  • A chance to try again: Some recipients were not able to maintain sobriety after their first treatment episode. Thanks to the scholarship, they were able to return when they were truly ready to make changes, proving that recovery is a journey that may require more than one attempt.

These stories show the life-changing impact of the scholarship. Each person’s journey is unique, but all are connected by the hope and opportunity that Micah’s legacy provides.
